Wistful YA~TRIANGLES & Author Kimberly Miller

Meet KIMBERLY MILLER.

She received Bachelor's degrees from Georgian Court University and Rutgers University and a Master's degree from The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She is an avid reader and particularly enjoys true crime and young adult novels. She grew up in New Jersey and currently resides in Monmouth County with her husband and three cats. When she's not writing, she loves to travel to sunny islands where she snorkels by day and stargazes by night. She always takes her Nook with her. Spencer Hill Press | My Website | Twitter | Tumblr | Facebook | Goodreads

We're fortunate to have her here today, to share her wisdom, journey, and leave her splats in the Alleyway! She's sharing her YA novel TRIANGLES!

Hi Kimberly! Nice to see you. What initially inspired you to write this story?
My love for the island of Bermuda. It’s one of the safest, cleanest, nicest islands I’ve traveled to, and I’ve been to many islands in the Caribbean. The people are amazing, the island is fantastic, and the weather is beautiful. Plus, they have the Bermuda Triangle! I’ve cruised to Bermuda and stayed on the island several times. Also, I wanted to write something that hadn’t been done for the YA market, and the Bermuda Triangle seemed like a great idea!

I love the way you mentioned the Bermuda Triangle! You make it sound exciting, like a tourist destination instead of some mystery puzzling man for the last umpteen years. :) Let's give the readers the description of TRIANGLES.

TRIANGLES by Kimberly Ann Miller

Genre: YA contemporary fantasy
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Release date: June 18, 2013
Pages: 216

A cruise ship. A beautiful island. Two sexy guys. What could possibly go wrong?

In the Bermuda Triangle—a lot.

Hoping to leave behind the reminders of her crappy life—her father's death years ago, her mother's medical problems, and the loser who's practically stalking her—seventeen-year-old Autumn Taylor hops on a ship with her sister for a little distraction. When she wakes up in the Bermuda Triangle, she fears she's gone nuts for more than one reason: that loser's suddenly claiming they're a happy couple... a hot guy is wrapping his arms around her and saying "Happy Anniversary"... and suddenly, she's full of bruises, losing her hair, and getting IV medication. Autumn visits the ship's doctor, hoping for a pill or a shot to make the craziness go away. Instead, she's warned that these "alternate realities" could become permanent.

She just has to ask herself one question—how the hell is she going to get out of this mess?

Did you have any specific method for developing this idea?
Not really. As ideas come to me, I stick them in an idea file on my computer. When I pick an idea to start writing about, I take that idea and expand on it. As a matter of fact, for Triangles, I had this in my file: BERMUDA TRIANGLE - girl on a cruise, goes through the triangle, something happens. That was it! From there, I developed the idea as I wrote it.

What's your favorite part of the story?
I love the parts where the guys fight over the main character. Those scenes are my favorite to write!

What can your fans expect from you next?
I just signed the contract for the companion novel, Parallel Triangles. It has the same theme with a different cast of characters going through the Bermuda Triangle!

Ooh...that's exciting and it sounds so good!! Best of luck with that. Thank you so much for being here.

Lastly, Alleywalkers. Check out this AMAZING giveaway Spencer Hill Press is doing for TRIANGLES.

Meet J. Million in her own words: Website | Facebook | Twitter

I'm a music genius. Work for a publisher, hate snow, love Koala Bears and totally want one for keeps, but I'm pretty certain there's laws against this. Huge movie Buff, can cook like a pro. Have two awesome kids and a dog, love playing and watching sports. I read all the time and write everyday. Laughter is the best medicine in the world so i tend to find the humor in everything.

Firstly, it's an absolute pleasure to have Jen in the Alleyway, today. She's not only a hard working wife, mother, and writer; but she's also on of my precious CPs! She is the best to brainstorm with. Oh, and she's also a vital assistant at Month9Books

So Jen, how did this story get its beginnings?
Honestly, I was working on rewrites to another story when this one just came to me. A girl possessed with Magic who was living in a world that would condemn her the moment they discovered her power. Yet have one who lost her powers long ago planning the perfect opportunity to steal the powers from the girl. A week went by and this story didn't leave so I decided to write a little. A little turned into 15K before I knew it and the characters were still there. So that meant setting aside the rewrite and finishing this one. So that's what I did.

Let's show the readers your gorgeous cover and share SPOKEN'S description.

SPOKEN by J. Million

Genre: YA Fantasy/Fairytale
Released: February 2013
Pages: 311

Description: Princess Calla Everfield has many secrets: a secret crush on the servant Greyson, having no desire to marry Prince Devon, but her biggest secret is the magic she does in the west tower with her governess, Lady Destiny. Magic is forbidden in the land of Hillshire, and princess or not if Calla is caught tangled up with such evil, her punishment will be death. When Greyson threatens her life, she thinks he's discovered her secrets.

Greyson has always followed orders. Even the ones he's questioned like his father sending him to the mortals world to befriend a princess. And then being told if such a time comes when Lady Destiny tries to strip the princess of her powers, he must kill the princess. When the plan to kill Calla fails he decides to whisk her away to his magical kingdom, Spalden. And now, he finds himself going against his father's wishes again when he falls for Calla, instead of Isadora the intended bride he's to marry.

While Calla learns how to hone her power, Lady Destiny begins to steal dark energy and eventually lures the princess back to Hillshire. In order for Calla to save herself and everyone she cares about from Lady Destiny's wrath, she must make a choice. If she gives up her magic she'll never see Greyson again since her father has a bounty out on him. However keeping the magic means she'll have to kill her mentor, and leave her family behind forever, since magic isn't accepted in her world.

Introduce us to one of your more 'behind-the-scene characters.

Shaina is an Ogre and at first she threatens to beat Calla to a pulp for slandering the crown. Because Calla thought Greyson was a servant, she had no idea he was a prince. But once this mess is all cleared up, they become really good friends. The kind you'd die for.

I remember Shaina! She adds lots of unexpected flair to the story.

Care to share with us a favorite passage from the book?

I gasp as the door’s wood melts into a solid gold block. Magic. It swings open slowly and blinding light is the only thing visible. I glance over at Greyson and mouth, “What are you?” But he doesn’t answer, instead he shoves me through.
What sort of music did you listen to while writing SPOKEN?
My playlist can be found on my blog. But here's a preview:

1. Kiss with a Fist- Florence and the Machine (first scene with her and Greyson)

2. Safer to hate her- You And Me At Six (Greyson and her)

3. Stubborn Love - the Lumineers (Scene in the woods, she saves Greyson)

4. If You Run - The boxer Rebellion (Last Chapter)

Got to love the Lumineers. What are you working on next?

The Last of the Giants: it's a retelling of Jack and the beanstalk, but Jack's a girl.

Ooh, Jack's a girl. LUV that idea. Give us a peek?

I study the raindrops that trickle and spider off into another direction against the window when a dark carriage replaces the grayish green backdrop past the liquid dotting the glass. My tired, sore body pulls away from my desk and moves gingerly toward the front door.

Inhaling deeply, my callused fingers grip the metal handle, turning to open my home to the visitor. Blanched knuckles drop, while a black hat tips and water pours off the brim, landing on my rug. “Evening, Jackie. May I come in?”

I shift slightly and let the knight enter. “I haven’t been home for more than an hour.” I eye him, as his full lower lip turns downward. “Try not to get everything all wet and slopped with mud.”

He shrugs off his coat and hat while I shut the door. Cocking his head toward the fireplace he laughs, “No fire?”

“What’s the point, Lance? As soon as I return home, the king sends one of his finest to order me right back into battle.” It comes off a little bitter, but it’s the truth. I’ve been home long enough to wash the blood off myself and clothes, put on clean linens and he comes knocking at the door. Can’t a girl get one day of rest?

Lance looks back and smiles. “Guess you shouldn’t have planted those beans.”

My grueling mistake is a joke to everyone in Beantown, everyone but me. Damn that peddler and his beans. They wrote a tale about it, but they got a few things wrong. My mother wasn’t a widow, not when I planted the beans. They also made the hero of the story a guy not a girl. I guess normal girls would scream and run from a Giant, instead of kill it.

Adverbs & Cliches! My Nutshell Has Cracked!

A few weeks back, I celebrated and helped promote one of my besties latest releases. This one was Book II in her writing craft series In A Nutshell. For more details on that, take a peek HERE.

Title: ADVERBS & CLICHES IN A NUTSHELL
Author: Jessica Bell
Publisher: Vine Leaves Press
Released: April 7, 2013
Pages: 123

I'd like to thank the author for supplying me with an ecopy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

Favorite Lines/Passage: I like to think of a writer's "voice" as the soul of their imagination. If you stay true to your soul, you will produce unique fiction. There is no doubt about it. Because everyone has his or her own soul. (page 7)

Description: Have you been told you use too many adverbs and clichés in your writing? Want to remedy it? Then this is the book for you!

In Adverbs & Clichés in a Nutshell: Demonstrated Subversions of Adverbs & Clichés into Gourmet Imagery, you will find thirty-four examples of prose which clearly demonstrate how to turn those pesky adverbs and clichés into vivid and unique imagery. Extra writing prompts are also provided at the end of the book.

Not only is this pocket guide an excellent learning tool for aspiring writers, but it is a user-friendly and simple solution to honing your craft no matter how broad your writing experience. With the convenient hyper-linked Contents Page and Indexes you can toggle backward and forward from different examples with ease. Use your e-reader's highlighting and note-taking tools to keep notes as you read, and/or record your story ideas, anywhere, anytime.

COVETED! A MUST HAVE ... for any writer!

MY SPLATS:  Critiquing or breaking down books focused on the craft of writing is not an act I normally do. I usually just read them, too busy noting writing ticks the author happens to point out that apply to me. And although it was easy to notices a few of my personal writing flaws from Bell's analysis, I was able to easily see that this is a wonderful reference for any writer - fiction, nonfiction; novels, articles, or shorties.

I love the structure of this book. Its quick and to-the-point examples are genius and so easy to follow, very user-friendly. Throughout her examples, Bell challenges the writer to see these flaws in his/her writing, but not to panic. She points out they are easy pitfalls for any writer. Even the most seasoned of writers must be reminded from time to time about certain aspects of their writing: i.e., thus the need for editors.

This is a MUST HAVE for any writer's craft arsenal, along with its companion - Book I, Show & Tell in a Nutshell: Demonstrated Transitions from Telling to Showing. It would also be a fabulous gift for any high school or college student.

AND ooh, if you look over in my right sidebar under Writer Aids, you'll find Jessica's book added to my Reads To Master The Craft list.

MY SISTER'S REAPER by Dorothy Dreyer

Genre: YA paranormal
Release Date: May 2013
Publisher: Month9Books - Website - Blogger Central - Facebook - Twitter - Pinterest - Goodreads

I'd like to thank the publisher for supplying me with a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

Favorite Lines/Passage:  The float creaked again. It was as if the structure atop it was falling in slow motion. The lemmings screamed and scrambled back as Nicole bumped into Emily, and they both went down in a tangle of perfectly tanned limbs. The top half of the peace sign ripped free, slicing toward the ground. A jagged two-by-four plunged toward the ground like a spear, sticking into the dirt inches from Emily's head. Even I had to gasp. Her eyes were wide, her face twisted with fear.

Description:
There’s bragging, there’s trying to impress a boy, and then there’s Sixteen-year-old Zadie. Zadie’s first mistake was telling the boy she’s crushing on that she could bring her dead sister back to life. Her second mistake? Actually doing it! When Zadie accidentally messes with the Reaper’s Rite that should have claimed her sister Mara, things go horribly wrong (you think?). Mara isn’t the same anymore—Zadie isn’t even sure she’s completely human, and to top it off, a Reaper is determined to collect Mara’s soul no matter what. Now Zadie must figure out how to defeat her sister’s Reaper, intent on claiming both girls, or let Mara die … this time for good.

NIGHTSTAND WORTHY!

My Splats: Fast-paced action and fluent descriptions carry this tale from ordinary to something more as a teenage girl unearths her fate in defeating her sister's grim reaper.

Zadie is an average high school girl: working father, older and more popular sister, and a BFF who can talk up a storm. Her mother is in the picture, but not really, for reasons the reader eventually discovers.

As the story begins, the reader first hears Zadie's great young adult voice. It's assured and honest, yet a quiet thread of caution weaved throughout. Similar to most teens--they wear one facade on the outside, while keeping another stifled inside. And there is reason for Zadie's apprehension. Something has happened to her older sister, giving the appearance of one thing yet Zadie's gut tells her it's another.

From here, secrets about things Zadie can do begin to emerge, coxing an emphatic nerve with the reader. She's always kept this hidden. Although Zadie's problem(s) is unique, it's relatable and easy to follow.

Zadie just wants to be happy and ignores anything that doesn't seem normal, welcoming her sister, Mara, back to school. But that can't long with Mara acting all weird. Both Zadie and the reader can't help but question everything.

Many mysteries slowly unfold, teasing the reader as each crumb is revealed. When I first began reading, I would have never guessed elements such as faeries and witches would be involved. Let's not forget about the character of reapers either. This technique gave a strong variation on an average tale.

From Zadie's childhood uses of magic and apparent ability to wake her sister from a coma to the witchy lady and her grandson down the street, and her sister's zombie-like demeanor since home from the hospital, it's obvious lots more is going on in Zadie's life than the cute guy at school who sudden paying her attention.

When people start getting hurt and even killed, after being near her sister, Zadie knows danger has upped the ante. With the help of a few, Zadie takes that thread of caution from the beginning of the story and molds it into courage. She's willing to fight for her sister, her family, and a future that seems uncertain. At books climax, there is quite a bit of action that added to the story's appeal.

The writing is what drew me most. Word choice and flow captures confusion and hesitance from the characters beautifully. Setting descriptions are vibrant and the dialog choices are unforced. Ease weaves from one word to the next. Character thoughts and actions progress naturally, feeling quite plausible. The writing style challenged me to read on.

I'd recommend this book to YA and suspense/mystery lovers. There is a ting of romance in there, so romance enthusiasts would surely like it too.

She's provided an excerpt of her story. 2. I'm giving you a sneek peek into her next release. 3. She's GIVING AWAY TWO eCopies of SHIFTING PRIDE!!

Laura Diamond is a board certified psychiatrist and author of all things young adult paranormal, dystopian, horror, and middle grade. Her short story, CITY OF LIGHTS AND STONE, is in the DAY OF DEMONS Anthology by Anachron Press (April 2012). Another short story, BEGGING DEATH, is in the CARNAGE: AFTER THE END Anthology Volume One by Sirens Call Publications. Her Young Adult Paranormal Romance novelette NEW PRIDE and novel SHIFTING PRIDE debuted late 2012 from Etopia Press. She has just signed with Pugalicious Press to publish another Young Adult novel, ZODIAC COLLECTOR, due Winter 2013. When she's not writing, she is working at the hospital, blogging at Author Laura Diamond--Lucid Dreamer, and renovating her 225+ year old fixer-upper mansion. She is also full-time staff member for her four cats and a Pembroke corgi named Katie.

It is wonderful to have you here, Laura. We've known each other through cyberspace for a while, now. I'm thrilled for your success. A huge 'thank you', too, for being so patient with the release of this interview. I can't wait to hear your insight.

Do you have any specific methods for developing your story ideas?
It's really the main character who presents themselves first. Then, I imagine the world they live in and the trials they experience. I identify what's most important to them and make sure to put as many roadblocks in their way as possible.

Now, SHIFTING PRIDE, your novel that debuted in late 2012, what moved you so much you just had to write it?
I always start with a character. Nickie popped up in my mind and she shared her story--how her dad went missing and how she was the only one who believed he was still alive. And there was a mystery behind it. I traveled with her on her journey of discovery, from finding clues leading to her dad to when she grew whiskers and pointed ears!

A story can't be without at least that one character that speaks to us. So true. Let's give the readers the description of the book.

PURCHASE LINKS: AMAZON | OMNILIT | B&N
Curiosity brings out the Kitty...

Sixteen-year-old Nickie Leone has proof her father is still alive. His watch arrives in the mail, with a note telling her to “keep it hidden,” and her curiosity is piqued. She obeys the request, even keeping it hidden from her mother. But when an email from her father disappears before her very eyes, she begins to question her own sanity.

And things get even more complicated when she meets Xavian Katz, the blue-eyed, blonde hottie whose contagious smile and ridiculous sense of humor make her want to tell him all her secrets. But there’s a current beneath his charm that she can’t quite read. He’s hiding something.

When Nickie grows pointed ears and whiskers…and then a tail!...Xavian (who always seems to knows the right time to be around) seems unsurprised. He’s a shapeshifter too, a coincidence that Nickie can’t deny or ignore. She needs his help to master her new abilities, because her father’s rival, Derek, wants her to join his tribe. The last thing she wants is to be under his rule, but Derek’s got something to do with her dad’s disappearance—she knows it. And maybe letting herself be captured is the best way to find out…

Can I say I'm all GEEKY over this cover! Um, yum... Moving on...How did you go about structuring the story?
I started with action and danger and carried that through every. Single. Chapter. It keeps Nickie on her toes and propels the story forward at breakneck speed. The momentum drives everything to an epic blowout at the end.

Nickie seems popular on your mind. Can you give us a peek into her?
Nickie has faced the loss of her father. He's been missing for a year and everyone but her believes he's dead. But she doesn't give up on him. Or herself. Despite the pain of his loss, she bucks up the courage to survive, to keep moving forward, and to never lose hope. Her tenacity is admirable and she'll always have a special place in my heart because of it.

Alleywalkers, here's surprise #1. Read on...

Walking with my head down to fend off the stiff breeze, I rounded a corner and smacked into someone leaning against a tall, chain-link fence.

“Oh my God! I’m so sorry!” My arms shot out and my fingers latched onto the guy’s leather jacket for leverage. Hard muscles tightened under my weight. Lucky for us, whoever it was had good balance and didn’t topple beneath me. He took the force of me crashing against him and held me upright at the same time.

“No problem. I don’t mind being tackled by a pretty girl.”

I lifted my gaze, helpless in the stranger’s arms. Blond hair, cerulean eyes, cocky smile. Holy crap. It was Xavian.

“Hi there. Long time no see.” He smiled. His earthy scent hovered in the air around him. It made me forget where I was, but only for a second.

“What are you doing here? And I did not tackle you.” I squared my arms against his chest and tried to push away.

“Where do you think you’re going?” His hold tightened around me, and I should have felt a surge of panic, but I didn’t. “Yeah, tackled. You’re like a linebacker.” His smile widened. Oh, he enjoyed this way too much.

My mouth dropped. “So, first you call me pretty, then you say I’m a linebacker?” His cuteness didn’t absolve him of being a complete idiot. I gave him another shove. Oh, man. His chest felt solid under his coat. My mind projected an image of him shirtless in the midst of a grueling workout and a foreign heat rose from my belly.

“You’re not listening. You are pretty.” Xavian’s grip held firm.

I was a weakling compared to him. Damn it.

“Oh.” Wait. He really thought I was pretty?

His smile faded as he stared into my eyes. His jaw squared, and his Adam’s apple bobbed.

My breath caught in my throat. He’d gone so serious. “What?”

The edge of his mouth slid up into a half-smile. His stare intensified. Our faces were inches apart, and he didn’t move. At all. My eyes dropped to his full lips. I held my breath as his mouth moved closer to mine.
His head tipped to the side, and his lips parted. A lock of hair slipped in front of his right eye. I tipped my face to meet him. His smile widened. “We’re going to be late.”

Something snapped in my brain. He’d faked me out! The simmering heat in my stomach ignited and flared to the top of my skull. What a jerk. I curled my fingers into fists and cocked my head to the side and away, far away. “So, are you going to let me go or not?”

Xavian frowned. “Are you sure that’s what you want?”

I stuck my chin out. “Why wouldn’t I want that?” Damn how breathy my voice sounded. He probably thought he could make any girl swoon with a simple smile. Well, he couldn’t win me over that easily…despite the fact that he almost had.

He squinted. “I don’t know. This feels right. And you seemed to be so comfortable in my arms.”

It was hard to tell if he was flirting or joking. “Why do you say things like that?”

“Like what?” He smiled again.

“Please let me go.” I backed this up with an exaggerated sigh.

“All right. Since you said please.” He relaxed his grip, drawing his fingers along my waist before tucking his hands in his coat pockets.

Instant fire blazed along the trail he’d traced. I bet he knew exactly what he was doing. He was definitely a jerk. A goofy, cocky, incredibly hot jerk.

I extended my right leg and took a healthy step away from him. Holding his gaze, I refused to surrender, despite the fact that my cheeks were ebbing heat. “So, you didn’t answer my question. Why are you standing here?” I tucked a random strand of hair behind my ear and imagined my shoes melding with the concrete. Visualization was barely enough to keep me from flinging myself at him. Pretty sad considering how he’d embarrassed me.

He’d also called me pretty and said being in his arms felt right.

“Waiting for you.” His eyes flashed with the confession.

My heart accelerated. “How did you know I’d be here?”

“Lucky guess.” He advanced, closing the gap between us.

“That’s kind of creepy.” I slid to the side in case I needed to lean on the fence.

He chuckled and continued his advance. “It’s always nice to be told you creep people out.” He tucked his fingers into the fence links, an arm bracketing each side of my face, and rocked on his heels. Each rock in brought him closer to my mouth.

Oh no, not again, buddy. I stuck my index finger in his face. “You’re following me.”

“How could I be following you if you’re the one who ran into me?”

I curled my finger. “Oh, yeah, you’re right.” I peered down the street toward the school, hating that I’d just admitted to him that he was right about something.

“Come on. I’ll walk you to school.” He sounded bored all of a sudden.

I snorted, knocking his arm out of the way so I could brush past him. “Don’t bother.” Hot, cold, serious, joking, who could keep up with him? I didn’t want to bother, not with everything else going on. My shoes obliterated the leaves littering the sidewalk, crunching with protest. I shook my head. Who was I kidding? I wanted to bother—I wanted to bother a lot. But I was so caught up in finding Dad that I didn’t have the time, or the wherewithal, to figure out the mystery called Xavian.

“Walk as far ahead as you like. Then I’ll really be following you.” He chuckled

Whoa...that is an awesome voice! Way to go!!! What do you think, Alleywalkers? Like the voice?? But before you answer that, here's surprise #2:

BRING ALONG + 1

My Splats: Blood, sweat, tears, and courage is what it takes at a private school for talented kids; oh, and bit of spunk, too.

The story begins during Elena's middle grade years, giving the reader a slice of what made the young adult Elena. Then we travel to an active feel,  a cross between Fame of the '80s and the more recent Step Up series, with the setting an artsy high school, a scholarship, and Elena specializing in hip hip. The author includes tangible elements like Elena's elation during her first day upon seeing the performance stage; as a performer myself, I found these scenes accurate and easily visible.

I enjoyed the regular teenage obstacles such as not fitting in or crushing on the wrong boy that constantly blocked Elena's path to achieving her goals. By far, my favorite roadblock in this story was the villainist. Superb. Seriously, she's a character to despise. And Elena's goals weren't just about becoming a better dancer, but also to extend herself beyond her usual means and comfort zone, to push, explore, and be more.

Ultimately, what continually drew me back to the story was the friendship between Elena and her BFF-boy, Seb. Their relationship was real and, if we're lucky, one that any reader would cherish in real life. Of course, there has to be another complication of Seb having the sweetest crush on Elena since middle grade and her always being too busy to notice. That definitely added another human ingredient and humor; humor which is short-lived. Only after a tragedy, when it's curtain's last call, does Elena realize the true depth of her friendship with Seb. You'll have to read to discover their final steps.

So, on that note, I'm pleased to welcome Elena & Sebastian here!!! I can't wait for the Alleywalkers to meet you both. Being a former dancer myself--well, technically I still dance. Um, just not like I used to professionally--I totally related to your story, especially the setting. Care to tell the Alleywalkers a bit about yourselves?

ELENA: Okay. Hi, I'm Elena Martinez and I'm a student at Montacrue Performing Arts School.
SEB: Scholarship student
ELENA: Yes, I have a dance scholarship for hip hop but I also study acting.
SEB: Like me. I'm her best friend.
ELENA: I haven't finished Seb.
SEB: Sorry.
ELENA: I live in the Bronx and I have an awesome mom who wants me to live my dream.
SEB: Your mom likes me better.
ELENA: And I have annoying best friend who goes to the same school.
SEB: That's me. Sebastien Duval. My dad is French and I have twin younger sisters. I'm an acting student.
ELENA: ‘Cause you love being the center of attention.
SEB: Hell yeah!  I also help to keep Elena calm when she gets a bit....tense.
ELENA: And I make sure Seb keeps focused.
SEB: We're a good team.
ELENA: Yes we are.

Care to give us a little peek into your world?
ELENA: Rehearsal, audition, train, dance, act, study, rehearsal, audition, train, spend time with my friends.
SEB: Alright, there is a lot of work, especially if you're Elena and want to do EVERYTHING. But for me, I don't finding acting hard. I like spending time with my family and friends too. I love being at Montacrue.
ELENA: I do have great friends and they give me perspective.
SEB: It can get really competitive between the students sometimes.
ELENA: That's an understatement. As we know, some people would do anything to get what they want. But I guess that's what it's going to be like in the real world. I'm ambitious, but hurting others to get there..it's not me.
SEB: Not us.
ELENA: No. I don't know what that will mean for the future but I hope I'll work it out before I graduate!

What do you really think of each other? Now remember, I've read book I. *cheeky grin*
ELENA: Hmmm
SEB: Too many things to choose from actually.
ELENA: Ummmm. Does he need to hear this?
SEB: Come on…..
ELENA: He’s easy–going and funny which is completely opposite to me. I stress out but he takes everything as it comes, mostly. And he makes me laugh. Plus he’s considerate. He sees me. He notices things and I really appreciate that. There. Your turn.
SEB: Thank you Elena. Now what can I say about you. Hmm. Elena does have her moments. There have been times I wanted to kill her.
ELENA: Don’t hold back.
SEB: But I have to say her undying loyalty and affection for her friends is truly remarkable. She’s not okay unless her friends are okay and she would do anything to help them, even when they hurt her. Her heart is huge and she sees the best in people. Oh man, she’s crying. You can be annoying too you know.

What's been your biggest challenge in life?
ELENA: Learning to take life one step at a time and not stressing about things.
SEB: Getting Elena to relax.
ELENA: Very funny. (jabs Sebastien) Romance. I mess up every relationship. I am a disaster
SEB: I second that. She's doesn't know a good thing when she has it.
ELENA: Or a bad thing.
SEB: I struggle to get people to take me seriously.
ELENA: It would help if you stopped joking around. (she holds his hand) But I know you're there for me and your friends.

NOTE from the author: I was born and raised in Sydney Australia to Greek immigrant parents. I have always loved the performing arts – dancing, acting and singing but considered them merely hobbies with the expectation of a ‘serious’ professional career. I won an award when I was 11 for a short story competition but didn’t pursue any sort of creative writing at that point. My mother always encouraged me to keep writing but the most I did was entertain friends via emails about my endless travels overseas.

After nearly twenty years in the corporate world, my means of financing my passion for dancing, singing and acting classes, I decided to live in London for an indeterminate amount of time. I do not know why but I found myself with a desire to rekindle my creative writing, the first novel burning in my head. Thus began the birth of the Dancers and Divas Series. It began as one book and has evolved as a trilogy. Since then, I have not been able to stop and have so many ideas constantly begging me to be written.

I am also playing with Play and TV Script formats as alternate way of telling stories. Maybe the Dancers and Divas series will be a TV series one day – it is definitely the right type of story for it! If only my skills could keep up with my brain! I hope you enjoy my books and please feel free to contact me in regards to my writing or to ask any questions. Facebook | Twitter | Mailing List | Goodreads

Girl On FIRE~YA Author Leigh T. Moore & Giveaways!

The heck with GIRL ON FIRE. Can you say author on fire? Here's what Barnes & Noble says about my next guest:
Leigh Talbert Moore is a wife and mom by day, a writer by day, a reader by day, an editor when time permits, a chocoholic, lover of contemporary romance, and occasionally she sleeps. "The Truth about Faking" is her debut young adult romance.
** Find my personal review on GOODREADS.**

Since then, she's released ROUGE--the first in her adult romance series published by Pocket Books, THE TRUTH ABOUT LETTING GO--a companion novel to THE TRUTH ABOUT FAKING, which focuses on Ashley Lockett--one set for release in June and on in July. Her sequel to ROUGE is also in the works. Yup. Leigh is one busy bee!

Even though some of you know her, let's see if we can learn a bit more of what makes her tick.
LEIGH T. MOORE

Hey, Leigh. This spotlight has been a long time coming. Thank you for your patience. Let's first highlight the two YA books you have out now. What inspired you to write TTAF?
I was actually inspired by the science fiction movie SIGNS--LOL! I got to thinking about the idea of a pastor who loses his faith and why; how does that change him; how does he get it back (or does he)?
Originally TTAF was not going to be a romantic comedy. I'd intended it to be much more serious. But Jason & Harley just took over, and they're so hilariously cute, the whole story changed. (I actually do explore the faith questions with another character in my latest WIP, which happens to be light sci-fi.)

Kind of funny when characters grow lives of their own and take over. :) Tell us about them.
Harley is the main character. As I wrote her, I had three people in mind: Cher from CLUELESS, my current best friend's 16 yr-old little sister-in-law, and my actual best friend in high school. Harley's a bit insecure, but she's got a plan. And she thinks she knows exactly what her future holds--until Jason crashes into her.

Jason is the new kid, hottie, car geek, "bad boy." (He's not really bad; Harley is just very resistant to his charms). He's outgoing and friendly, and he loves teasing Harley and testing her limits.

Harley might have been resistant to Jason's charms, but I on the other hand was not. *slyly grinning* How does TTALF differ from TTAF?
First, an important note: these are not series books. They’re companion novels, which means they’re set in the same location and share characters, but you don’t have to read them in order. The stories are separate.

Thanks for sharing the difference between series books and companion novels. Go on...
Faking is very much a romantic-comedy. It’s YA chicklit with a little “message” thrown in. It’s a light read with a touch of seriousness.

Letting Go is more emotional and edgy. It also has a message, but the main character is dealing with her feelings in an unhealthy way and goes after trouble. So it’s a little darker.

Gives us a little peek into what makes your main character, Ashley, tick.
Ashley was super-close to her dad, who was a writer for a men’s health magazine and worked from home. She was his guinea pig. They would test recipes together, exercise together, do all sorts of things together. So when he is taken from her, she goes into a tailspin and becomes an adrenaline junkie. But that’s not her baseline personality—her anger is driving her in this story.

Think you'd have chosen her as a friend when you were in high school?
Definitely. Ashley’s a great friend, she’s just going through an extremely tough time right now. So it’s hard to judge her friend-worthiness on her actions in this book, although by the end you see it.

Two guys. One girl. Opposite attractions. Share one thing from one scene between these three that will make the reader go "I have got to read this!"
Okay, so Jordan is kind of in love with Ashley. She really likes him, too, and they have major chemistry. But she cannot deal with his lifestyle. She’s given up on “doing the right thing.”

Colt’s a party guy/bad boy, and he’s very much onboard with helping Ashley misbehave. But Jordan knows she’s just acting out and is very protective toward her—even after she pushes him away.

That dynamic leads to several near-fights between the guys and ongoing verbal battles. I have a few favorite scenes, but the fight in the hall when Jordan loses it and the part where Colt whips out the panties… it can all be explained, but Ashley’s almost devastated by that.

Give us the deets on your next project - which, btw, has a brilliant title!
Hey, Thanks!!! DRAGONFLY is the start of a contemporary romance-family saga series. It’s all set at the beach, and it’s about a family that has a big secret. Main character Anna stumbles upon the truth, and then it’s about what she’s going to do with that information.

It’s soapy and steamy and sexy and just super-fun, escapist beach-read. One reader compared it to VC Andrews meets Gossip Girl. I don’t know about that because I didn’t read or watch Gossip Girl, but I hope readers lurv it! (Note: it is not erotica.)
The books are all pretty much ready, so I’m releasing them close, which I think readers will appreciate. Dragonfly (#1) will be out June 6; Undertow (#2) will be out in July; #3 will follow late-Aug/Sept; #4 is set for the end of 2013.

PRAEFATIO & Creator, YA Author Georgia McBride & WIN a SIGNED copy!!!

GRAFFITI PROMOTIONS is a regular feature on Writer's Alley, where authors and aspiring writers, editors, publishers, and anyone from the publishing world, to share their journeys, valuable wisdom, and to promote their work along a road of humor, encouragement, and inspiration. Features include Author Interviews, Book Promos, and Character Introductions.

There is no easy way to start describing this next author. Lots of writers know her or, at the very least, have heard her name. An inspiration to lots of writers, those just starting out as well as seasoned writers. She's been instrumental in my personal journey as an author. I first met her when I began blogging, stumbling upon her newly started writing community, YALitchat. Having no idea what I was doing, other than the desire to write professionally, I offered to help her new community grow in anyway I could. She welcomed me on the administrative level without even batting an eye.

She is a wife, mother, promoter, over-achiever, hard-worker, founder of the well-know & respected YALitchat community of writers, author of the PRAEFATIO series, and owner/publisher of Month 9 Books. Meet Georgia McBride.

Welcome, Georgia. So excited to have you visit the Alleyway!! It's always nice to hear where authors started out, what stories fascinated them as young children and beyond. Care to share?
I have always loved anything Dr. Seuss as a child. When I got older I read Stephen King, VC Andrews and lots of classic literature.

Got to <3 Dr. Seuss.

Speaking of what inspires an author, what moved you to write PRAEFATIO?
AMAZON | B&N | GOODREADS
Grace, Gavin and Remi all insisted that I write their stories. And so, PRAEFATIO is essentially that.

Ah...persistent characters. Let's give the Alleywalkers a description of the story:  Seventeen-year-old Grace Ann Miller is no ordinary runaway...

After having been missing for weeks, Grace is found on the estate of international rock star Gavin Vault, half-dressed and yelling for help. Over the course of twenty-four hours Grace holds an entire police force captive with incredulous tales of angels, demons, and war; intent on saving Gavin from lockup and her family from worry over her safety.

Authorities believe that Grace is ill, suffering from Stockholm Syndrome, the victim of assault and a severely fractured mind. Undeterred, Grace reveals the secret existence of dark angels on earth, an ancient prophecy and a wretched curse steeped in Biblical myth. Grace’s claims set into motion an ages-old war, resulting in blood, death and the loss of everything that matters. But are these the delusions of an immensely sick girl, or could Grace’s story actually be true?

Praefatio is Grace’s account of weeks on the run, falling in love and losing everything but her faith. When it’s sister against brother, light versus darkness, corrupt police officers, eager doctors and accusing journalists, against one girl with nothing but her word as proof: who do you believe?
“With Praefatio, Georgia McBride proves that you can take any genre to a higher level. This is teen fantasy at its most entertaining, most heartbreaking, most compelling. Highly recommended.” –Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author."
Hope you don't mind, but you've worked in so many areas of the publishing world I'd like to pick your brain. (Not in the Walking Dead way, so no worries.)

Flash questions: Three important elements to writing a novel?
Characterization, pacing and story - in that order.

If no one cares about your characters, they won't support the story. Pacing is key. A well-paced story is also a well-developed story that has highs and lows at just the right times. Then of course, there is story. Without a believable, well thought out and rich story, the reader loses interest.

Biggest challenges for creating YA literature in today's market?
The biggest challenge is getting your books to a wide audience. Apart of that, just being relevant and standing out is quite difficult.

Piece of advice for aspiring authors?
Find community.

I bow to that piece of wisdom. Describe yourself in five words.
Opinionated, caring, forgiving, level-headed and hopeful.

Current WIP outlined using five images?
CONFESSIONS OF THE DARK QUEEN: Crow, ball gown, bloody knife and computer.

Naming your characters?
They tell me their names mostly. For my upcoming YA, CONFESSIONS OF THE DARK QUEEN, I had to come up with names. But I am always on the hunt for unusual names. Recently, I did a school visit and found a student named Hunter Blue. I got permission to name the lead in an upcoming work, MESSIAH, Hunter Blue. Also, the draler I bought a car from recently took a call from his teen dayghter, Hensley. I later inquired as to the spelling and gave that awesome name to a female lead in an upcoming book. Be careful, or I might have to name one of characters after you!

Got to say, you've intrigued me with your WIP. Looking forward to read it! Thank you so much for joining us and leaving your splatter on Writer's Alley.
