YA Fantasy At Its Finest

Wistful YA Wednesday is special today because I have two separate young adult spotlights.

 Firstly, we're celebrating the release of Heather McCorkle's fantasy novel, The Dragon Empire! For today's stop Heather is answering the following question:

The world you created in The Dragon Empire is very elaborate. How did you keep track of everything?

Heather: I created a notebook and put everything about the world in it. I wrote up pages on each type of dragon, each island, each character, the different creatures and cultures, and even drew maps of the world. It was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun!

YAY for Heather!!

For my second spotlight, I'm sharing a book I read over the summer. It's quite different than anything I normally read.

Favorite Line/Passage: I glanced at Jane, who had put her back against the boxcar and had her eyes closed. She looked pretty sweet when she was asleep. I decided then and there that Jane was about as big a blowhard as there was, but at the bottom of her bucket there was something real. She knew life was short, and she lived like it was and sucked all the juice out of it. I told myself right then and there I was going to do the same, even if I knew I'd never be quite like Jane. Wasn't nobody could get to the juice the way she could, and wasn't nobody ever who could enjoy it as much as she did, even the times when it was sour.

Description: Jack Catcher's parents are dead—his mom died of sickness and his dad of a broken heart—and he has to get out of Oklahoma, where dust storms have killed everything green, hopeful, or alive. When former classmate Jane and her little brother Tony show up in his yard with plans to steal a dead neighbor's car and make a break for Texas, Jack doesn't need much convincing. But a run-in with one of the era's most notorious gangsters puts a crimp in Jane's plan, and soon the three kids are hitching the rails among hoboes, gangsters, and con men, racing to warn a carnival wrestler turned bank robber of the danger he faces and, in the process, find a new home for themselves. This road trip adventure from the legendary Joe R. Lansdale is a thrilling and colorful ride through Depression-era America.

NIGHTSTAND WORTHY

MY SPLATS: a brilliantly written and poignantly delivered tale of a boy abandoned by life's fate and set on a journey of discovery. 

Jack has been dealt scenarios in life that no teen should ever have to encounter. After the untimely death of both his parents - on separate occasions - he's left to his own devices and without much reason to live. He's desolate, hopeless. Meeting Jane gives him a reason to keep going. He's not sure why, but it does. 

Jane, although annoyingly chatty at times, brings to the surface inner questions gnawing at Jack - questions that plague us all at times: What is the sense of it all? Jane needs purpose in life, to do something important, find meaning in life; her fulfillment comes from being proactive with others and wages she'll find herself and meaning in return. She's a very philosophical character, which is kind of ironic.

The initial element you will notice when reading this tale is the dialog. It's obvious that neither of the lead characters are of high intelligence. But nonetheless, they are amazingly drawing. Jack holds such simplicity that it's beautiful, while Jane makes up for her lack of intellect with loads of snark and wit. This combination makes for some interesting interactions, especially when the two have a run-in with a group of armed bank robbers and are slowly sucked into a dangerous adventure.

As they flee these bandits, they are given a reprieve by gaining the aid of an elderly lady; interacting with this woman seems to give their lives and current circumstances some humanity. And meeting up with others whose futures look bleaker than theirs adds even more humanity, giving them strength. They continue to help others, which only helps themselves, all while gaining in hope and the desire for new futures. As the tale reaches its climax, it's not evident how they will survive but as the reader you just know they will.

As I stated above, this story isn't something I normally read, and I'm not a big reader of dragons and such - but they are really cool. Have you read a book out of your box, lately?

It was a lot of fun writing a middle grade story. In a way, you get to pretend you’re a kid again, living vicariously through your characters. Gabriel Stone and the Divinity of Valta is a story that I would’ve loved to have read as a kid. That was important for me—to try writing something I know would have made me want to stay up late flipping through the pages like I did when I found something I loved. And I knew from the beginning that I wanted my middle grade characters to go to another world, because I think that’s one wild ride of an adventure where anything can happen, and does. So letting my imagination go wild with a fantasy story that includes middle grade kids, another world, and lots of unusual creatures—some good, some dangerous, and a dying parallel world—was crazy fun. I especially love Finley the talking, tracker monkey and I hope the middle graders will too.

A signature Alleyway SPLAT from me: I had the pleasure of reading Leigh's book THE TRUTH ABOUT FAKING. I normally gravitate to paranormal and otherworldly reads, but I offered to read for Leigh. I was not disappointed. Her prose are solid, concise, and hold plenty of meaning, drawing the read into her stories. You really should get both these books.

Favorite Line/Passage: So. That was that. It was going to be Drew's word against mine. Just great. I'd be a loser forever, especially since rumor had it that he and Abbie Fields were boyfriend-girlfriend now, even though Mr. Thompson warned that dating should being in seventh grade, not fifth. With Abbie being the most popular girl in our class, I probably had little to zero chance of regaining my cool-kid former status. Crap.

Description: When Toby Karlson, aka TK, is at the wrong place at the wrong time, he goes from cool kid to total outcast with just one hip check. Sixth grade orientation was scary, but TK didn't realize it would change his life. Now he has to hang out with the smartest and geekiest kid in school, while dodging the school bully and his posse. If TK were on the ice, he'd know exacly what to do. But this is life and not a hockey game. Can TK get his good-guy status back at fifth-grade camp?

NIGHTSTAND WORTHY +1

My Splats: a middle grade time capsule complete with the bully, the bashful girl crush, the annoying kids who think they're all that, and an embarrassing mistake that will live in infamy.  

Oh, my middle grade! TK's voice has it all from shyness to awkwardness, questioning everything yet wanting to stand firm to his convictions. He's a true MGer, who middle schoolers will relate to. There's an inner toughness about him, but also a soft side that he most often wears as his outer clothing. Undoubtedly, he wants to fit in - as most of us do but are unwilling to admit it - but at what cost? And when an unexpected event whirls his world in a tailspin, TK must learn to see his world with different eyes.

Now, some adults might call that a rite of passage and/or maturing. And it is. Kind of, sort of. But to an eleven year old, it kind of-sort of sucks. Growth and change are always scary, and, in this story, it's the doorway Yankee uses to open up other life lessons to be examined and learned.

The strain on his friendship with his best friend and regular crowd pushes TK to problem solve, using the lessons he's learned from playing ice hockey to work it out.  This is one of my favorite aspects of this story. I can't tell you how excited and thankful I was to see a MG storyline show the value of athletics beyond the physical sport being played. It mimicked the real value of youth sports and its application in all aspects of real life. That is what youth sports are about - yes, said from this hockey mom, herself.

By story's end, Toby gained confidence by standing firm to who he is also gives him a new perspective and respect for his new 'nerdy' friend. TK discovers that he's really loyal.

This was a quick and easy read, a definitely must for any middle grader - especially boys who play sports.

J.A. Souders was born in the heartland with an overactive imagination and an overabundance of curiosity that was always getting her into trouble. She first began writing at the age of 13, when she moved to Florida and not only befriended the monsters under the bed, but created worlds for them to play together.

Because she never grew up, she decided she’d put her imaginary friends to work and started writing. She still lives in the land of sunshine and palm trees with her husband and their two children.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Leah Clifford currently lives in Ohio, but frequently dreams of finding an abandoned mansion in the south that she can restore. In her spare time she loves to travel and has been known to drive over two hours to get kickass quesadillas. So far for jobs she's sold corn at a roadside stand, been a pizza delivery girl, a camp counselor, an extreme cave tour guide, a flight attendant, a waitress (x3), a grocery store clerk and a writer. Out of all of them, writing has been the most fun. She's pretty sure she's gonna stick with it.
